Challenge
Recycling vehicles is a huge challenge for today's automotive industry. Introducing recycled plastics to newly manufactured vehicles will be a crucial step to engage the industry into a sustainable transition, going beyond the adoption of purely electric vehicles on our roads. In Japan, the 3R’s campaign - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - is being carried out to promote the recycling of plastic resources.
However, there are critical issues, including the acquisition of valuable feedstock and necessary sorting techniques and improvement to operational efficiency, that stand in the way of the spread and enhancement of material recycling, i.e. turning plastics back into plastic raw material.
Veolia's solution
To this end, Toyota Tusho, Kojima Sangyo and Veolia established Planic. This new company is to be Japan's largest recycled plastic processing company. Planic collects, sorts and compounds mixed plastic based on material type to recycle them back into plastic raw materials. These plastics are able to be re-entered into the automotive producing processes, contributing to a closed-loop circular economy.
Through the operations carried out by PLANIC, Veolia, Toyota Tsusho and Kojima contribute to the promotion of resource recycling and environmental impact reduction. Thus, Veolia is bringing its expertise on waste sourcing and recycling to support the automotive industry in Japan and its major actors that are fully committed to paving the way for a new automotive trend.
